September 15, 1944.
MacArthur demanded this wretched island be taken… That’s all I want to say about that. So many violent deaths.
This is just a Hollywood movie (“The Pacific” by Hanks/Spielberg). No Hollywood movie can ever “show” war. I cannot imagine what it truly must have been like.
(Editor’s Note: My apologies but when I try and post with my phone Word App like here, things get “messed up”.)
We could never imagine what those men went through. And it’s very understandable where the saying, “There are no atheists in a foxhole.” came from. I imagine it would apply to the men in those amphibious vehicles coming to shore as well.
Amen, gpcox. Amen.
We’re on the same wavelength – My posting on May 4 2016:
Battle of Peleliu – E. B. “Sledgehammer” Sledge
His book, “With the Old Breed” contained in an audio book video.
I read that book then lent it to someone… 😢 Did the same with “Letters From Ronnie”. Forgot who I lent them to and they never came back…
Incredible filming but I don’t think, as you say, we can ever truly recreate the feeling, sights or sounds of an amphibious beach landing.
… and the only ones who were really there will understandably not wish to explain what it was like.
Indeed!
